When the Three Amigos decided to join forces in South Beach we here at the Beef, as well as many millions around the globe, openly scoffed and criticized the move. We were offended not just by the open egotism but also their choice destination: Miami. We have never liked the Heat and after 2006 we have despised them. Miami is not a city that oozes with basketball lore. There are no traditions, no legends, no black tops where great players first crafted their games. “Fans,” and I use the term loosely, are nonexistent or at the very least are bandwagoners. I wrote an article just after “The Decision” in which I stated, “…the city of Miami certainly does not reflect the nation as a whole. Nations have souls, and Miami is severely lacking in this category.” It appears that I was not wrong.
The Miami Heat have been forced to air television spots encouraging their self-absorbed fans to actually show up to the game. If you have seen a Heat game this season you know that the majority of people show up to the game well after it has started and leave long before it is over. Can you not tell that the passion for the game exudes from these people?
Can’t you hear Nelson Muntz saying “haw haw” after watching that? I know I can. It is worth laughing at. I mean seriously, the Heat have probably spent millions on this “Fan Up” campaign. They cannot even fill seats! Miami never deserved these players and it never will. Sure the citizens of Dade County will party until the early morning hours if the Heat win a championship but how will that be different from any other night?
It seems that the biggest coup de etat in sports has inspired little fanfare. The fans of the Heat should be embarrassed in themselves and in their city. They never cared about the sport, all they care about is being in the news and in the media more. With the pathetic fan attendance it is clear that the Heat are playing second fiddle to CSI: Miami in terms of audience. (Insert horrible Horatio Caine one-liner here.)
Do better, Miami. You really do not need to give the rest of the country more reasons to mock you. They already want to see you fail.
